ROUNDTABLE DISCUSSION ON ESTABLISHING THE SOUTHEAST ASIA TILAPIA ASSOCIATION – SEATA

On October 28 and 29, 2025, in Singapore, with support from USSEC (US Soybean Export Council), representatives from the Vietnam Fisheries Society (VinaFIS), VASEP, and the entire tilapia value chain in Southeast Asia held a roundtable discussion to establish the Southeast Asia Tilapia Association – SEATA (Southeast Asia Tilapia Association).

According to information shared at the workshop, the global tilapia market size reached USD 10.6 billion in 2024 and is projected to reach USD 14.5 billion by 2033 (CAGR 3.52%). Total global tilapia production is reported at 7.2 million metric tons (MMT), with the Asian region contributing more than half of the production, approximately 4.49 million tons (FAO, 2024). Tilapia production in Southeast Asia is an important component of the region's aquaculture industry, contributing to food security, livelihoods, and economic development. Countries such as Indonesia, the Philippines, Malaysia, Myanmar, Thailand, and Vietnam are the leading tilapia producers in Southeast Asia. Each country has developed large-scale tilapia farming systems suitable for local environments.

At the roundtable discussion, all delegates agreed that the Association is being promoted to develop the tilapia industry, enhance competitiveness, and promote trade through:

  1. Promoting deep cooperation in the tilapia industry in the region;
  2. Enhancing the competitiveness of the Southeast Asian tilapia industry internationally;
  3. Seeking solutions to improve efficiency in commercial tilapia production; and
  4. Promoting sustainable development, energy, and initiatives in the tilapia industry through information sharing, capacity building, research collaboration, and policy advocacy for industry development.
